E-books – Why your English Teacher will hate me for telling you this

Question. Is it more important to be right or to be great?

If you write blogs or produce brochures and reports to promote your business, please don’t be boring.  I mean boring to the extent that everything is perfect and the grammar hasn’t put a foot wrong. Result – Corporate blandness that looks and sounds like all the other brochures knocking around. Because correctness isn’t necessarily the way to attract new clients… Continue Reading…

7 Ways to get your business in the spotlight without blowing the budget

What lengths would you go to, to get your business on the map?

My dad was only 11 years old when he made a name for himself by breaking into the local Police Station.

Picture the scene…its June 1942 and England is at war with Germany.  A Messerschmitt has crash landed on the South Downs after a ‘Dog Fight’ over the English Channel and a German airman has been captured by the Home Guard.

In the sleepy English village where my dad lived, the presence of ’A Gerry’ in the police station was big news.  Which was when my Dad hatched a plan to ‘liberate’ the buttons off the Airman’s uniform. Continue Reading…

The challenge of creating a Socially Powered Business

What can you learn from IBM’s journey to ‘Going Social’?

A brilliant white paper from Techweek Europe appeared in my Inbox yesterday.  It illustrates how IBM deployed Social Software to create a Social Business.  IDC conducted a Social Business Survey in 2011 and the results indicate that Social Software adoption is growing.  IDC partnered with IBM to help convey its evolution toward a more efficient and productive company using Social Tools.

IBM’s experience of turning it’s organisation into a Socially powered business has actually shaped the organisation’s approach to more or less everything – including organisational, cultural and process change. But what was the tipping point that helped them get there? Continue Reading…

E-books. If you can talk you can write

Do you avoid using reports, blogs or e-books to promote your expertise because you believe you can’t write?

Granted if you were the class drop-out (like I was for a while) – that’s understandable. But I’ve heard people talk very negatively about their writing ability, and the mere thought of creating a report felt like an assault on the north face of the Eiger.

But writing isn’t an elitist activity reserved for the talented few.  Just because you flunked your GCSE’s, or spent more time down the local chippy than studying, this doesn’t bar you from getting some writing under your belt. Continue Reading…

“Cupcakes anyone?” – how to create a digital giveway to tempt new prospects

What do you do to find new clients and generate news leads?

Imagine you’re a Baker and you are at the local village fete promoting your incredible cakes.  The problem is that nobody knows about your stand tucked away in the corner and you’re struggling.  You’re beginning to worry that you could be going home with all your stock. You could of course stand there, smiling meekly behind your stand hoping that some nice people will come by and take a look.  The same dilemma is faced by many businesses whether they sell cakes or not… Continue Reading…

Why women will save the economy (in the end)

I don’t know about you, but the endless coverage of the Euro Zone, Greek Debt, Banks and rescue plans is enough to drive anyone to drink.

We are on an endless merry-go-round of talks, bailouts, quantitative easing and yet more talks.  It never ends – but still NOTHING is shifting it seems. Where do we go from here and what role will women play in making things change?  Continue Reading…

Why resisting change could spell the end for many small businesses

Big changes are already on the way for anyone running a business, but for some the whole idea of change is something to resist at all costs.
